The irony of Indian Political System !

Presidential elections is the latest topic doing the circles across the country. Will it be Pratibha Patil or Jaswant Singh, or will it be Prez Kalam again (although media reports 'confirmed' he is out of contention)?? Although media is working over-time in digging down as much 'intelligence' as possible on these candidatures (some Television channel today reported the dhaba Pratibha Patil frequently dines at, in Jaipur and how the chef described about what dishes she likes) the real question is - are we moving away from the main issue? Just because some political segment wants to back Pratibha Patil just because she is a Marathi 'bahu' or the first woman to be nominated for the President role.

The fact remains that the President of India is the head of state. Also called the 'first' citizen of India and the Supreme Commander of armed forces. Yes, the President's role is largely ceremonial, with real executive authority vested in the council of ministers headed by the Prime Minister. I agree that the executive powers are as directed by the council of Ministers but at the same time it's important to choose someone who is much beyond a rubber-stamp, cutting across political boundaries, gaining respect of the political fraternity and hopefully the country (wishful thinking, in my opinion!!).

President Kalam was the closest fit to the above broad pre-requisites and with the current nominations I don't forsee the probable candidates with even 50% conviction as that of President Kalam. He had his share of failures and resistence..... dissolving Bihar Assembly was one, and staying order on the hanging of terrorist Mohd. Afzal. I will not explore moral grounds by arguing around capital punishment but of firm belief that the President shouldn't have reconsidered his plea.

Like in business, when you write 'net/net' on the balance sheet, the country at large (and I FOR SURE) believe Kalam was reasonably successful. He should have recontinued a second term, but the irony of Indian Political System is such that.....

Well, I might have to partially disagree with you here. I don’t think Kalam is a super president to make a comeback for second term. He might be an intelligent rocket scientist or a Good Samaritan but certainly not an extraordinary president.

But then, like you said there isn't any other useful replacement available either. So, it’s a more like the usual choice we have to make for a MLA or MP - choose rouge or a criminal. Only this time it is choosing between a useless and a puppet president.

Any discussion that is around Indian politics or politicians is going to frustrate any sane individual. I can’t believe that the hard earned money I make is going away as taxes to this bunch of jokers who make no sense when they talk.
